The concept of Special Olympics began in the early 1960s when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp in her own backyard for people with mental retardation. From that experience, it was clear that these individuals were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts believed. In 1968, Mrs. Shriver organized the first International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field in Chicago, in the belief that the lessons these athletes learned through sports would translate into new competence and success in school, in the workplace, and in the community. Above all, Mrs. Shriver wanted the families and neighbors of people with mental retardation to see what these individuals could accomplish, to take pride in their efforts, and to rejoice in their victories.
Jerri Bennett founded Special Olympics Collier County in 1971. Since then, our local program has grown to over 250 athletes participating. Special Olympics Collier County is run by an all volunteer management team and coaching staff. All funds are raised by our local staff and remain in Collier County. Funds are used to provide equipment, uniforms, transportation, training and competition for the athletes.
Today, Special Olympics Inc. is the world’s largest provider of fitness training, education and athletic competition – coupled with social, life, and leadership skill development opportunities – for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Florida, an accredited program of Special Olympics Inc., was founded in 1972 and is one of the largest volunteer-driven athletic organizations in the state.
Special Olympics Collier County is a not-for-profit organization. Families and athletes are not charged a fee to participate. This is made possible through individual and corporate contributions, grants, and special events.
